Miriam Alcántara, MA, PhD Psychology Candidate (she/her)
I’m Miriam Alcántara, a bilingual (English/Spanish) psychology PhD candidate providing psychotherapy and psychological assessment with a strong focus on PTSD and Complex PTSD, neurodivergence (including autism and ADHD), and psychological testing, particularly with special interest in working with BIPOC, queer, trans, and late-diagnosed neurodivergent individuals.
I was born and raised in Mexico City, and my work is deeply informed by an understanding of racial justice, immigration, and acculturation stress. I recognize how trauma, displacement, identity, and systemic inequities shape mental health, and I strive to offer care that is culturally responsive, affirming, and grounded in a strengths-based perspective.
In my clinical work, I support children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. I integrate tools from Trauma Parts Intervention, Somatic Therapy to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) while tailoring treatment to each person’s unique biological, psychological, and social context. My areas of focus include trauma-related disorders, autism spectrum conditions, anxiety, depression, social anxiety, chronic nightmares, and the psychological impact of chronic medical conditions. Additionally, I provide Relationship and Couples therapy pulling form various modality based on presentation ranging from Gottman and Attachment frameworks, to Structural Family Therapy which has been shown to be very effective in relationship and polycule therapy
My academic journey began in Medicine, followed by a Master’s degree in Psychology with a residency in Sleep Disorders. I am currently completing my PhD in Psychology with a specialization in Behavioral Neuroscience at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). I began my clinical work in 2008 and moved to the United States three years ago.
My research closely reflects my clinical interests. My master’s thesis explored a meditation-based intervention designed to promote lucid dreaming in women experiencing chronic nightmares related to PTSD, with the goal of improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety. For my doctoral research, I study Mu rhythm and brain connectivity in autistic individuals across different levels of support needs, using EEG data to better understand neurodivergence and inform more inclusive psychological interventions.
I am LGBTQIA+ competent, neurodiversity-affirming, and deeply committed to creating a therapeutic space where clients feel seen in the fullness of who they are and supported in both healing and self-understanding.
